KDR is excited to present "Snow Birds," the annual Florida Room exhibition, co-organized this year by Jordan Smith. The show will be on view from July 27 through August 17, 2024.

Inspired by Andy Sweet's evocative photographs capturing the influx of Europeans to South Beach in the 1970s and 1980s, "Snow Birds" delves into the enduring aesthetic and cultural significance of the seasonal migration to South Florida. Sweet's images are a historical marker, a window into a period of time that's an integral part of Miami's cultural heritage. The initial wave of "Snow Birds" vividly portrays a time when South Beach became a vibrant melting pot of cultures and lifestyles, leaving a lasting imprint on the region's identity.

The exhibition's theme is particularly timely as it reflects on the recent demographic shifts exacerbated by the pandemic. The notable surge of New Yorkers and others from northern states and countries relocating to South Florida has reshaped the cultural landscape, introducing new dynamics and narratives to the 'Snow Birds' tradition.

The artists on view have sparked various interpretations and reflections on migration, identity, and place. This year's iteration focuses on contributors from outside Florida, some "birds" hailing as far as Greece and Panama. Each artist brings a unique perspective, riffing on the term "Snowbirding" and what that means to South Florida's sun-drenched shores.
